Executive Director
Reports To:        President, Board of Directors
Salary Range:     $90,000 - $110,000

The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of the Museum of the Cherokee Indian. This is an executive-level position with responsibility for the success of the organization overall. This position will ensure day-to-day operations align with the overall mission, values, goals & objectives of the organization. This position will lead, guide, and direct the work of all others within the organization to ensure business goals & objectives are met.

Essential duties of the position are:

• Ensures the work of others within the organization meets the highest professional standards of museum operations and properly align with the overall business strategies of the organization. The Executive Director will set the highest standards of work and procedures to ensure the organization is presenting the highest quality of work.
• Ensures operations align with the adopted business plan of the organization. Provides support and guidance to members of the staff to ensure all work aligns with business objectives and manages employee performance to the highest professional standards.
• Ensures the Museum of the Cherokee Indian is always represented at the highest standards by ensuring a memorable, historically accurate and respectful representation of Cherokee history and culture.
• Ensures operations meet business goals and objectives to ensure sustainability of the organization into the future. Works closely with fundraising and development to ensure critical programs are funded and permanently endowed.

Required education and experience:

• Bachelor degree required but master degree preferred in the field of Public History, Library Sciences, Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field. Work experience is not accepted in lieu of a degree.
• Experience in business and/or non-profit management at an executive level for a minimum of 10 years. Such experience would include personnel management, fiscal management, business operations management, policy and procedure administration, and public relations.
• Non-profit management certificate is preferred.

• Strategic planning and monitoring to formulate a long-term strategic plan for the organization and monitor success
• Fiscal management from a business and non-profit perspective to ensure financial resources are professionally managed and adequate to support the mission and operations
• Personnel management to ensure only the best candidates for positions are recruited and retained to accomplish the mission
• Exceptional program management experience to ensure all programming of the organization meets the highest professional standards
• Effective fundraiser with experience in working with grantor agencies such as public entities and private foundations to ensure compliance with granting requirements and adequacy of financial resources
• Superior leadership qualities to lead, guide and direct operations staff to ensure pleasant experiences for guests and an enjoyable, but disciplined, working environment
• Advanced public relations skills to ensure the organization is always well represented
• Enhanced ability to work under a board of directors to ensure the success of the organization
• Broad knowledge of Cherokee history and culture with the ability to ensure all information presented by the organization is respectful, accurate and represents the Cherokee People well
• Demonstrated experience working within a cultural non-profit such as a museum, cultural center or interpretative center
• Superior ability to manage complex projects including planning, monitoring, budgeting and overall project management skills
