Summary
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney (Term-Limited) Regional Domestic Violence Firearms Enforcement Unit Gender-Based Violence Prevention Division The Regional Domestic Violence Firearms Enforcement Unit (RDVFEU) in the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is seeking an attorney to fill a 2-year grant-funded term-limited Deputy Prosecuting Attorney (DPA) position. The DPA will help expand the unit's capacity to ensure that the highest risk firearm cases are better addressed through:
- Screening, triage and acted upon in as close to real time as possible to reduce harm.
- Enabling existing DPA engagement in efforts to expand reach on Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs), DV Criminal and Civil Orders to Surrender and Prohibit Weapons (OTSW) compliance, and implementation and enforcement of firearm relinquishment laws.
- Outreach to law enforcement (local, state and federal), immediate case triage, replication and training.
*Priorities will be on domestic violence, or relevant and adjacent community-violence or other high risk firearm cases as referred or needed.

Job Duties
The DPA will expand unit capacity to engage in more real-time threat response by reviewing new cases/referrals closer to the time of initial incident, screening, filing, or identification from other reporting systems (e.g. DVR, ERPO, first appearance cases, direct referrals from LE, threat assessment or others, etc.).
- Build out unit infrastructure to fulfill mission and expand existing DPA capacity so they can train, consult, triage and convene with law enforcement at all levels of government, at the earliest possible point to prevent accelerated pathways to violence, prevent firearm tragedy and ensure disruption of firearm risks.
- This also includes training and technical assistance to promote safe and lawful firearm recovery, fidelity to firearm prohibition laws, sale/transfer and relinquishment laws, and improved screening for potential search warrants, as needed or indicated.
Other duties include: "Upstream" case handling, collaboration and review of the highest risk/highest lethality cases identified by unit partners in Law Enforcement, PAO/CAO offices, Unit Advocates or Threat Assessment Specialist as needing DPA assistance. This will include relevant first appearance cases, Daily Violence Report (DVR), ITA, threat assessment reports, or those prioritized for a DPA appearance at the weapons compliance review calendars, or full Protection Order hearings to help promote swift and certain compliance, among others, as directed. Engage in outreach, training, consultation and triage with Law Enforcement, SCAO and KCPAO DPAs about firearm surrender laws, ERPOs, ITA and other cases presenting firearm risks in coordination with KCPAO Crime Strategies Unit (CSU), Gender-Based Violence Prevention Unit and the Juvenile Division, among others, as needed or appropriate.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
- 4+ years of experience as an attorney.
- Excellent skills working as part of a multi-disciplinary team (versus working in more of an "individual contributor" role).
- Prior experience working on DV cases, search warrants, experience working with law enforcement in "real time" on active investigations with after-hours availability, as needed.
- Prior experience training law enforcement, other prosecutors, or prior training/presentation skills.
- Natural problem-solver with an ability to think outside of the box.
- Demonstrated experience and desire to work collaboratively.
- Comfort and interest working in areas of law that are ambiguous or not clearly defined; ability to weather and lean into an evolving legal landscape.
- Victim and community-safety centered, excellent written and communication skills and desire to work further upstream to prevent firearm violence.
- Must have a strong commitment to race, equity and social justice, including ongoing development of personal cultural competency.
- Active participation in PAO equity work, attending equity trainings and discussions.
- Must be Washington State Bar qualified.
Special Requirements:
- Member in good standing with the Washington State Bar.
- Must submit to a criminal history check.
- U.S. Citizenship or a lawful permanent resident (per RCW 36.27 and 29A.04 and Article VI of the WA Constitution).
Supplemental Information
This position is grant-funded for two years beginning on October 1, 2024. Term-limited Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys enjoy the same robust benefits package as non-contract employees and are represented by the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Association.
These positions are primarily in-person with some ability to telecommute each week as business needs allow, subject to a telecommuting agreement. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Salary : $112,073 - $140,441 annually commensurate with experience
