Role and Responsibilities

Certified:

  • Protect the public and preserve the peace, serving in a variety of assignments
  • Interpret and enforce all applicable federal, state and local laws, general orders, directives, and policies and procedures of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office
  • Work independently under limited supervision

Trainee:

  • Phase 1:  Trainee will attend Southwest Florida Public Service Academy and successfully complete the Academy, then employee must take and pass the Florida State Officer Certification Examination (SOCE)
  • Phase 2:  Salary will be increased to $46,000.00 and job title is changed to Deputy Sheriff.  Employee participates in a field training program with on-the-job training while supervised by LCSO Training Division and Patrol Field Training Officers
  • Phase 3:  Employee will then be responsible for the following:
    • Protect the public and preserve the peace, serving in a variety of assignments
    • Interpret and enforce all applicable federal, state and local laws, general orders, directives, and policies and procedures of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office

Physical Demands

  • Must take and pass the Physical Abilities Testing (PAT) with a maximum time of 6:04

Minimum Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Must be 21 years old, or older, or, if 20, must turn 21 before completing the Academy (Applies to Trainees only)
  • Must have obtained a high school or GED diploma
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Must have a Social Security Card
  • Must have successfully passed the Florida Law Enforcement State Officer Certification Exam (SOCE) or are currently attending a Florida approved Criminal Justice Academy for Law Enforcement (Applies to Certified Deputies only)
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony
  • Must not have used illegal drugs in the last 12 months
  • Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces
  • Must be able to work various shifts with rotating days off, as well as weekends, holidays and emergency events such as hurricanes
  • Must be able to speak, write and understand the English language

Preferred Skills

  • Computer literacy
  • Knowledge of Lee County geography
  • Polite, courteous, and professional demeanor
  • Bilingual
  • Experience as a Law Enforcement Officer in the state of Florida or out of state (Applies to Certified Deputies only)
  • Experience working or volunteering with a law enforcement agency in a civilian or certified capacity

  • Achieve a passing score on the Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (CJBAT) for Law Enforcement Discipline (Applies to Trainees only)

  • Psychological Examination
  • Medical exam and drug screen (after conditional job offer)
