Job Description

About this unit:

The NICU is a 108-bed unit within Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. This unit has 40 private rooms and 68 ward setting. The NICU is broken down into three different units ranging from low acuity/ short stay to cardiac based patients 27 weeks or above and small baby 22 weeks to post term. This unit is very large and, in both Butterworth, and the children’s hospital. Our NICU is the largest NICU in the state of Michigan and cares for babies from 37 counties. The span of acuity is unique in our NICU. One day you could care for a baby who is learning to eat and growing and do lots of teaching to family, the next you could care for a very sick baby on many drips who needs one on one care. The variety is a very special thing about our space. One thing the NICU is constantly striving for is Innovation. We are constantly conducting studies and taking part in trials to expand our knowledge.

What staff say:

  • “The support and involvement on this unit from other nurses and the team members is amazing. When I need help, I know there is always going to be someone there to help me”
  • “I stay on this unit because our patients are often born premature and stay in the NICU for an extended stay, the NICU experience provides the opportunity to follow patients as they progress. This experience allows the nurse to develop a relationship with the parents and newborn.”
  • “I love being able to teach the parents and answering their questions confidently, being able to see the progress babies make and how the care provided to them makes a difference in their health/lives”
  • “What keeps me working on the unit is a mixture of the care we give and the people I work with. I feel like the care we give here is some of the most life-giving work I could do. It means a lot to me to care for the babies here in a time they are very vulnerable and be there for the families as they navigate the trying time.”
  • “The NICU is unique in that the care provided to your patients is done in clusters called care times. These care times provide consistency for the babies on when they are fed, changed, and sleep.”

Summary of Responsibilities

Nurse Technicians act as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). These nurse techs only work within the NICU and act as safety attendants. NICU nurse techs function differently than a normal nurse tech within other units. These nurse techs complete vitals, check blood sugars and assist with other lab draws, wound care, feeding patients, stringing sterile lines, stocking, complete light cleaning, perform hearing screens and help cover the unit secretary during leaves or calls.

Essential Functions:

  • Collects and reports physiological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual needs of patients and families in coordination with and as delineated by the RN or Provider.
  • Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Provides direct patient care under the direction of the RN or Provider, consistent with clinical policies and procedures, and department standard work. Provides input in the development of an individualized plan of care. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Articulates the nursing technician role to the patient, family and health team members. Provides support to facilitate safe, quality patient care in a cost-effective manner.
  • Cleans patient’s environment / work area / equipment and communicates any equipment malfunctions to appropriate department / unit personnel.
  • Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data.

Orientation and Training

The role will begin with 2 days of training in a simulation center and 1 day of EPIC training with our Nurse Educators. These are prescheduled classes from 8 am to 4:30 pm. These in person classes will typically fall on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday week 1 of employment. Because these classes are prescheduled, you must attend all full days, and we cannot reschedule any of the required dates if you cannot attend. Attendance is compensated, as it is required for compliance. The remainder of your training is done on your unit, during the hours of the position you accepted and is also compensated. In addition, a Nurse Technician is often floated to other departments of higher need based with similar training. If they are outside of a unit with their similar training (like a med-surg NT going to ICU or HDVCH) they would typically just be acting as a safety attendant. But all typical units they are floated to would have very similar expectations and training.
