Executive Editor The Rapid City Journal is seeking a top editor to lead, inspire and grow local journalism while building a relationship with our readers in a vibrant, growing city that boasts one of the country's most beautiful backyards.
If you want to plan and strategize content, edit, do your share of reporting, and engage readers across multiple digital platforms and a robust three-day-a-week print edition, let's talk. This is a hands-on job that requires a collaborative spirit and the desire to mentor and develop journalists in a hungry newsroom.
This top editor will also build a local editorial board with community representatives, a role that will include leading a weekly meeting and shaping our voice on key issues across the Black Hills.
We are a digital-first newsroom that prioritizes original and enterprising local reporting, plus a heavy dose of high school and college sports. We also strive to renew our focus on producing the caliber of journalism that doesn't get done in South Dakota if we don't do it.
The Journal, the most prominent news organization in the western half of the state, won the South Dakota NewsMedia Association's award for general excellence in 2023.
A bustling regional hub nestled in the heart of the Black Hills, Rapid City is the gateway to all things outdoors with five national parks within 90 minutes -- including world-famous Mount Rushmore and the alien-like landscape of the Badlands - plus there's a lively local arts scene with no shortage of community theater, musical talents, and dynamic galleries. With a population of about 80,000, Rapid City is the Midwest's fastest-growing community.
An up-and-coming tourist destination, Rapid City and the Black Hills explode with visitors in the summertime, especially during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. When the temperatures drop, the opportunities to explore don't - with events like the Black Hills PowWow and Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo bringing in thousands to enjoy uniquely South Dakota activities.
