Metro Transit's Rail Division is seeking to fill one Career Service Rail Facilities Custodian Lead position! This is a working lead position where you'll help maintain the cleanliness of the interior and exterior of Light Rail Operating Facilities while taking on additional lead duties that support the Rail Facilities Custodians in their daily work. Lead duties include identifying, scheduling, coordinating, planning, assigning, training, overseeing, and evaluating the work of a small group of custodial crew members. This may also involve (but is not limited to) assigning overtime, approving leave, training personnel, and the performance of additional administrative duties. Our ideal candidate will demonstrate an interest in advancing their career, a wide range of leadership skills, the ability to collaborate and effectively communicate with a diverse workforce (verbally and in writing), and have attention to detail in both cleaning and administrative activities.

About Link Light Rail
Metro Transit's Rail Division manages and maintains Sound Transit's Link Light Rail service, which currently spans a 24.5-mile route from Angle Lake to Northgate and a 6.6-mile route from Redmond Technology to South Bellevue. By the end of 2026, the Light Rail is projected to expand to nearly 60 route miles, including the addition of 11 new stations. These rail services complement Metro's extensive fixed-route bus system and mobility services. Puget Sound transit agencies are collaborating to create an integrated transit network that enables people to travel farther, faster, and more easily.

Job Duties

As a Rail Facilities Custodian Lead, you will also:
  • Prioritize, schedule, and assign work for facility custodians, as well as oversee and evaluate their work
  • Work may include assigning overtime for employees, approving leave, training personnel, and the performing additional administrative duties as assigned.
  • Monitor the work-in-progress for Rail Facilities Custodians
  • Clean, sanitize and stock lunchrooms, restrooms, including tables, toilets, showers, sinks, and walls
  • Load and unload small equipment, debris, and trash
  • Mix and use cleaning chemicals and solutions
  • Empty trash and recycle bins
  • Operate and maintain task specific equipment, such as vacuums, carpet cleaners, shop vacs, floor sweepers, scrubbers, and steamers
  • Clean, stock, and sanitize restrooms and elevators.
  • Dust, wash, and vacuum surfaces; clean glass windows, including graffiti; clean surfaces up to 10 feet high
  • Set up and arrange furniture for meetings and other events.
  • Operate company-assigned vehicles
  • Request and stock various supplies
  • Clean glass and surface areas; remove graffiti

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills



We are looking for candidates who possess these MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • The ability to perform the essential functions of this position through any combination of work experience and/or training
  • Two years of professional cleaning/janitorial experience
  • One year of professional lead experience
  • Familiarity and the ability to navigate and communicate effectively using Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Word, or other basic computer programs
  • Skill in providing leadership and direction to others
  • Ability to be detail-oriented, organized, and use initiative to solve common problems
  • Skill in planning and coordinating work
  • Knowledge of basic safety rules and applicable OSHA laws
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team; ability to interact appropriately with others
  • Knowledge and skill of basic janitorial cleaning techniques
  • Knowledge and skill in the use and care of cleaning equipment
  • Ability to demonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendance
  • Knowledge of basic cleaning chemicals and safe handling requirements
  • Basic oral and written communication skills including the ability to understand, communicate, and follow directions in English.
  • The ability to adapt own communication style to support the language needs of teammates
  • Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds; ability to interact appropriately with others
  • Ability to work any shift (day, swing, graveyard)
  • Ability to work indoors, outdoors, and in inclement (or adverse) weather
Our most competitive candidates will possess these DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Custodial or janitorial experience within rail or transit facilities
  • Knowledge of Metro's operational policies and procedures
  • The ability to listen carefully to others with an open mind, and give/receive feedback
Necessary Special Requirements:
  • A valid Washington State Driver's License and an acceptable driving record. A five-year complete driving abstract will be evaluated at the time of offer.
  • First-Aid/CPR certifications must be acquired within 90 days of hire date (training will be provided by employer).
  • Non-standard work hours including evenings, weekends and holidays may be required.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to constantly lift, carry and move objects up to 25 pounds and may be required to move heavier objects. Assistance is available when lifting over 50 pounds.

Work Schedule
This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. The work week is normally 40 hours and is typically day shift, but is subject to other shifts as operational needs grow. This role is considered an essential position at Rail and is required to report to work during adverse weather and may need to work extended shifts with overtime during adverse weather or other emergent events. Work shift is subject to change and you may work a schedule of 5/8s or other schedules depending on a seniority-based pick system. Applicants should be willing to work 2nd (swing) or 3rd (graveyard) shifts if required. Shift pay is 5% for second shift and 7.5% for third shift, on top of hourly pay.

Current Hourly Rates: Day shift: $35.15/hour | 2nd shift (swing): $36.91/hour | 3rd shift (graveyard): $37.79/hour

Work Location: Work typically involves responsibility for more than one Light Rail station or other facilities. Employees may report to any of the following locations: Operations and Maintenance Facility Central at 3407 Airport Way S, Seattle, or our Eastside campus Operations and Maintenance Facility at 1925 120th Ave NE Bellevue, or any other locations that may be added or changed in the future.

Union Membership: This position is represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Local 587.
