King County Metro Transit's Rail Division
is looking for a dependable, detail-oriented Rail Equipment Body Repair Technician to be contributing member of the Rail Vehicle Maintenance team! Rail Equipment Body Repair Technicians are responsible for performing rail equipment body repair and structural maintenance work.
About Link Light Rail
Metro Transit's Rail Division manages and maintains Sound Transit's Link Light Rail service, which currently spans a 24.5-mile route from Angle Lake to Northgate and a 6.6-mile route from Redmond Technology to South Bellevue. By the end of 2026, the Light Rail is projected to expand to nearly 60 route miles, including the addition of 11 new stations. These rail services complement Metro's extensive fixed-route bus system and mobility services. Puget Sound transit agencies are collaborating to create an integrated transit network that enables people to travel farther, faster, and more easily.

Who May Apply
This position is open to King County employees and the general public. We are hiring for one (1) Career Service vacancy. This recruitment may be used to establish an eligibility list to fill future Career Service vacancies which may occur over the next twelve (12) months, at the discretion of the hiring authority.

Work Schedule
This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. Employees will work a 40-hour per week schedule with two consecutive days off. The w ork schedule may include non-standard work hours including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed. Per the union contract shift differentials are paid to those working second and third shifts. Shift pay is 5% for second shift and 7.5% for third shift, on top of hourly pay.

Current Hourly Rates:
Day Shift Wage: $34.56 - $49.37
Second Shift Wage: $36.29 - $51.84
Third Shift Wage: $37.15 - $53.07

Work Location
This position will be based out of out Operations and Maintenance Facility - Central (OMF-C) located at 3407 Airport Way S, Seattle, WA 98134. Work may be occasionally required at other locations such as OMF-E located at 1925 120th Ave NE Bellevue WA 98005 or any additional locations , as required.

This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for these positions are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substance testing program protocols.

Job Duties



Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and foundational expectation for all King County employees. As a Rail Equipment Body Repair Technician, you will also:
  • Repair body sections and parts of damaged rail vehicles involving structural work. Inspect frames and substructures for integrity.
  • Straighten, repair, or replace structural frame damage. Repair, straighten, or replace sheet metal, fiberglass panels, and other components.
  • Replace flat and curved glass in body and door assemblies.
  • Use mechanized or manual hand tools and equipment to sand, mask surfaces, and paint rail vehicles or components
  • Operate paint guns to apply primers, paint, finish, and sealants; spray and apply enamel, lacquer, or other protective and decorative coatings.
  • Paint vehicles and components according to specifications.
  • Perform rework or touch-up painting-polish and return vehicles for service.
  • Perform final inspections and repair detected faults.
  • Apply decals, transfers, stencils, and other identification markings to the finished paintwork.
  • Work in conformance with blueprints, drawings, sketches, photographs, specifications, shop practices, and instructions.
  • Maintain records of orders, completed repairs, time worked, and materials used. Enter and extract data using an automated vehicle maintenance system. Ensure work orders are complete and legible.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills



We are looking for candidates who possess these minimum qualifications:
  • The ability to perform the essential functions of this position through any combination of work experience, education, and/or training
  • Knowledge of cutting, forming, welding, riveting, and bracing material in repair and fabrication
  • Knowledge of current methods, materials, and techniques of sheet metal fabrication, body and structural repairs of vehicles or equipment
  • Knowledge of and skill in the full range of tools and equipment used in body and structural repair work and sheet metal fabrication
  • Has experience doing body repairs using bondo or fiberglass
  • Skill in verbal and written communication
  • Skill in performing body repair and vehicle structural maintenance work
  • Skill in applying automotive and equipment paints and sealants
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics
  • Ability to effectively engage in and sustain relationships with people from diverse cultures and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite, Asset Works, or similar maintenance management information systems
The most competitive candidates will also possess these desirable qualifications:
  • 2+ years of automotive body repair and paint experience
Necessary Special Requirements
  • A valid Washington State driver's license and an acceptable driving record. If you possess an out-of-state driver's license, you must obtain a WA state license within 30 days of hire.
  • Non-standard work hours including evenings, weekends and holidays may be required.
Physical Requirements
  • Working in confined spaces or high places from mechanical lift devices, support structures, and poles, indoors and outdoors, and in inclement weather, is required
  • Working within a live operating rail transit system
  • This position requires the ability to be mobile, perform manual labor, exert physical effort while standing, walking, or lifting materials, tools and objects weighting up to 50 pounds
