Summary



King County's Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) provides equitable opportunities for people to be healthy, happy, and connected to community.

This position is part of the Children, Youth and Young Adults (CYYA) division of DCHS and provides curriculum design, and basic skills instruction for out-of-school youth enrolled in at Center for Education and Career Opportunity (CECO) at Shoreline Community College . CECO is a re-engagement school that serves students who have dropped out of high school and supports them to and through a college education, tuition free. CECO students are disproportionately low income and/or youth of color. These are the same groups that show statistically lower success rates in traditional education and are increasingly under-represented throughout traditional academia and are increasingly under-represented moving up the education-attainment ladder (i.e.: attaining post-secondary credentials). CECO has more than twenty-five years of experience successfully serving these under-served, under-represented students.

We are looking for a strong instructor who can work with 16-21-year-old students, who can implement relationship-building strategies and brings a thorough understanding of Equity Social Justice to continue the successful tradition of supporting students toward their academic and other goals.

Job Duties



To be considered minimally qualified, applicants must demonstrate a background that provides the knowledge, skill and ability to:
  • Design and development of overall curriculum for individualized, student-centered instruction in GED preparation, basic math and reading remediation, and college math and English preparation.
  • Development of individualized educational plans for all students. Updating of all plans through regular review of student work, formal skills assessments, Pre-GED, and consultation with other instructors and social workers.
  • Teaching of GED preparation and/or high school completion, basic math and reading remediation, and college math and English preparation. Work at times in a lab format with multiple students with widely different skills levels working on a variety of individual assignments. Work at times in a group instruction format/setting with students with widely different skill.
  • Provision of excellent classroom management that respects the needs and different learning styles of students often unfamiliar with academic success. Work with other instructors and staff as a team to provide a consistent, supportive learning environment.
  • Administer and track pre-and post-diagnostic tests to students and maintain student records of attendance and educational progress.
  • Provide consistent communication regarding classroom expectations to students and CECO team and provide disciplinary classroom interventions as necessary.
  • Work in cooperation with program manager, other instructors and other CECO staff to plan and coordinate overall Learning Center activities and attain non-educational as well as educational goals of the program.
  • Work with the program manager and appropriate Shoreline Community College staff to ensure that educational programming provided at CECO meets the requirements of Shoreline Community College.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field and at least three (3) years of experience working with at-risk youth OR at least six (6) or more years of experience in a classroom/curriculum setting, working with at-risk youth, that demonstrates the ability to perform the job duties of the position.
  • Strong understanding of equity and social justice issues specifically in education, and the ability to bring equity and social justice issues into all aspects of the classroom.
  • Thorough working knowledge of youth learning strategies and effective instructional techniques for youth with special learning needs.
  • Strong teaching ability in mathematics, reading comprehension, and writing through secondary skill set.
    • Mathematics skill set should be at algebra 2 or higher at a High School Level.
  • Thorough knowledge of creating and implementing educational scaffolding and accommodations based on individual student needs.
  • Ability to be able to build individual relationships with students quickly.
  • Familiarity with the GED and its constituent parts.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced results orientated program and experience developing curriculum.
  • Strong ability to creative energy around education strategies.
  • Ability to assist in supporting the training of instructors in educational philosophy, instructional methods, and curriculum development for youth with barriers/challenges to meeting their education goals.
  • Ability to work with and communicate clearly and effectively with individuals of diverse cultural socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with community colleges, WorkSource, juvenile court, parents and funders.
  • Ability to work as a team member and have good interpersonal, facilitation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers, with working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to be on-site in a classroom setting Monday - Friday.
  • Ability to pass a Washington State Patrol background check.
ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION:
  • This position has been designated Non-Mission Critical. Unless otherwise directed by the County Executive, department director or agency head, all employees, regardless of designation, are expected to report to work or request leave d uring an emergency or inclement weather.   • This position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm. This position meets the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible with supervisory pre-approval.
  • This position is not represented by a union.
