Faculty Position 2018–2019 School Year, Part-time 50%

Instrumental Music Teacher, Lower School

(Grades PreK-– 5)

 

The Roeper School is a co-educational independent school serving gifted students in grades

Pre-K through twelve.  We are seeking a part-time (50% FTE) Instrumental Music Teacher for the

Lower School (Grades PreK– 5) to join our Bloomfield Hills campus faculty for the 2018 - 2019

school year.

 

We seek a candidate who values the balance of an intellectually challenging and creative program with developmentally appropriate and research-based practices. Our excellent student-teacher ratios allow for individualized instruction and education of the whole child. We are looking for a highly motivated and creative person who works well as part of a team as well as independently. The ideal candidate must demonstrate knowledge of best practices for teaching elementary instrumental and general music, and knowledge of teaching gifted students.

 

Position Description:

  • Direct and manage the instrumental music program for the Lower School, including teaching Beginning and Advanced Band, coaching music class students, conducting ensemble and fitting instruments
  • Develop and implement age appropriate and best practice curriculum that allow students to engage in and appreciate wind and percussion instruments
  • Design and teach elective classes, which incorporate the interest of students including general music with emphasis on vocal skill development and training
  • Assess levels of student achievement effectively and prescribe actions for individual improvement
  • Provide an educational atmosphere in which students will move toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and psychological growth and develop skills as a performer and as one who appreciates and enjoys music
  • Share student progress with parents through communication including conferences and progress reports
  • Plan and execute several concerts during the school year
  • Provide entertainment for school and community events
  • Coordinate purchases for the instrumental music program, including procuring music, instruments and supplies
  • Collaborate with Lower School faculty on school wide initiatives and support of education through varied activities including faculty meeting attendance, committee participation and providing supervision for lunch, recess, and after school duty
  • Supports the music program and the school to meet overall mission of The Roeper School

 

Credentials:

The preferred candidate will have:

  • Proficiency in wind and percussion instruments
  • Experience teaching instrumental music to elementary students
  • Knowledge/experience working with gifted learners
  • Excellent instructional and communication skills

 

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor’s Degree with major course work in Music, Music Education or other relevant field is required.   A Master’s Degree is preferred.
